The Dust People affected many people in the American West, and the Government attempted to mitigate the sufferings with the help of federal aid and relief. Americans reacted to government help; some were willing to accept and others were reluctant or refused help. The expanding government was viewed differently by the public and this disagreement reveals the constant conflict American society has about the role of government. In times of need and desperation, individuals are more likely to embrace a large federal government, but there were always be a section of the public that opposes federal expansion and liberal policies.
